(The following biographical sketch was prepared for publication in this paper by the Bonaparte Centennial Committee.)
J. D. Israel was born Sept. 14, 1818 in Butler county, Ohio. His parents moved to Decatur county, Ind., in 1830; in the fall of 1843, he came to Washington county, Iowa, and in the spring of 1850 he went by overland route to California, returning the following spring of 1851 and located in Harrisburg township.
He married Juliet Nixon, daughter of Isaac Nixon, Sept. 14, 1851. Their family consisted of eight children, as follows: Mary J., Emma, John T., Clara B., George H., Larissa Frye, Nettie Hissem and Joseph. Of these Mrs. Frye is the only one living now.
In 1883 J. D. Israel moved to Bonaparte to give the two younger children the advantages of better school facilities. He died Dec. 9, 1898, while his wife preceded him in death Dec. 24, 1888.
