Jonathan W. Nelson and wife Christena (Haigler)came to Van Buren Co. in 1834 from Pendleton Co. W.VA.before Iowa was a state. His brother Isaac Nelson had came previously to same area. Jonathan and wife had 12 children, four being born in W.VA. Their names was Mary, Wm. P., Isaac, Phoebe, Jehu, Lucinda, Kate, Amanda, Joseph, Elizabeth, Jesse, and Frank. Jonathan died in 1888 and Christena died in 1880 and both are buried in the old Iowaville Cemetery. Jonathan had an older brother, Zebulon, who came to Van Buren Col to live along with the mother, after the father, Benham Nelson was killed in the War of 1812. The mother's name was Nancy (Wilfong) Nelson and she and Zebulon are both buried in the Iowaville Cemetery. The mother had received a land bounty on the occasion of her husband's death.
