Thompsons in Iowa

THOMPSON, RIEF, COIL

I am looking for John Thompson, born in Missouri, married Margaret Rief. Lived around the Pottawattamie County area all of their lives. John's father was James E. Thompson and mother was Elizabeth Missouri Coil. James was orphaned at an early age by his fathers death in the Civil War and his mother died one year later, in Shelby Co. I do not know what happened to the 5 Thompson Boys. I have found James in 1880 census in Union Twp, Crawford Co at the age of 10 living with the Farmer family. These two Thompson's, John and father James are my two brick walls. I desperately need help getting past this stumbling block.
