Gertrude Merfeld was the mother, from Luxembourg Germany, Married to Peter Schmidt (changed to Smith at some point and time after Mathias was born) Mathias was born November 5, 1878 in Worthington IA (Dubuque Co) and baptized Nov 25 at St. Pauls church in worthington. on the 1880 census then Mathias disappears. He was rumored to have visited his sister, when he was older, and possibly lived the life of a "hobo" All info appreciated. esp. date of death and place of burial.
