Father Hawe Drowned at Stone City
The Rev. Father Richard Hawe, pastor of St. James church at Stone City, formerly assistant to the Rev. M. Barry of St. Columbkille's church in Dubuque, was drowned Monday in the Wapsipinicon river at Stone City. The body was recovered Tuesday afternoon about 6 o'clock. Father Hawe was to have addressed a party of boy scouts, camping in the neighborhood, on Monday. He did not appear, and inquiries made at his home elicited the information that he had not returned the evening previous. A search was made, resulting in the finding of his boat, containing his clothing and a gun. It is believed that he went bathing at a treacherous point on the river where the undercurrents are very strong. The funeral was held this morning at 9 o'clock, with Archbishop Keane officiating.
The Dubuque Times-Journal furnishes the following brief biography of Father Hawe:
Father Hawe was born in County Kilkenny, Ireland, in August, 1891, and received his classics and philosophical studies at St. Kierans college in Kilkenny. Upon completion of his studies in Ireland he came to America for his theological course at St. Mary's seminary in Baltimore. He was ordained to the priesthood in May, 1917, by Cardinal Gibbons. His first appointment was at St. Columbkille's church in Dubuque where he served from July, 1917, to October, 1919. He was especially active in work among the younger boys and was well known for the prominent part he took in Boy Scout activities. Later Father Hawe served as assistant at Dougherty and Rockwell, and was given the pastorate at Stone City, in August, 1924.
