mines or coal mines

On a lady's transcribed life story, she talks of coming from Hungary, now Romania, to Des Moines then Phildie, IA, where her husband worked in the mines. Where was Phildie? What was Phildie, a mine name or a community? Were these coal mines? She says they "played out", after 1910 by implication. Does anyone have links to mine info in IA?
