There are no official birth records for Iowa as early as 1859. However, according to John Toombs' Wapello County, Iowa marriage record to Katherine O'Brien on January 20, 1897, John Toombs was born in Burlington, Iowa. His father was William Toombs and his mother Naomi Ann Shehan. William and Naomi Ann were married January 4, 1858 in Wapello County, Iowa. They are both buried in the Agency Cemetery in Agency, Wapello, Iowa. William was born 1 April 1827 in Ballymoney, Antrim, Ireland and died 30 July 1883. Naomi Ann Shehan Toombs was born 16 August 1834 in Somerset, Pennsylvania and died 3 June 1884.
Their children appear to be:
