THORNTON - Merritt LeRoy Boyd, 86, passed away Friday (June 2, 2000) at Muse Norris Hospice Inpatient Unit in Mason City. Funeral services will be held at 1:30 p.m. Monday at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond, with the Rev. Robert Hetrick officiating. Burial will be at Amsterdam Cemetery near Goodell. Military rites will be performed at the cemetery by the Anton Juhl American Legion Post No. 440 of Thornton. Visitation will be held from 4 to 8 p.m. today and one hour prior to the service time Monday at Dugger Ewing Funeral Home, Belmond.

Merritt, the son of Clyde and Mary (Christianson) Boyd, was born Dec. 15, 1913, at Doniphan, Neb. He attended country schools for eight years in Appanoose County, Iowa, and graduated from Blakesburg High School in 1932. Merritt served in the U. S. Army in the European theater during World War II. He was discharged in June 1945. He was united in marriage to Helen Watkins on Aug. 10, 1945, in Cedar Rapids. They farmed in the Alexander and Rowan area of Wright County for more than 30 years before retiring to the Thornton area. Merritt enjoyed woodworking and traveling, spending winters in Texas for the past 22 years.

He is survived by his wife, Helen; a daughter, Betty (Elizabeth) Barkema and her husband, Dennis, of Goodell; twin sons, Gary and his wife, Donna, of Worthington, Minn., and Jerry and his wife, Suzanne, of Macon, Ga.; seven grandchildren; one great-grandchild; three sisters, June Huntzinger of Othello, Wash., Margaret and her husband, Jim Walls, of Puyallup, Wash., and Norma and her husband, Gene Marshall of Yakima, Wash.; one sister-in-law, Delores Boyd of Stansfield, Ariz.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Merritt was preceded in death by his parents and one brother. Dugger Ewing Funeral Home.
