Jean Finnie's birth is recorded in Warren County, Iowa on 14 November 1883; Mother's maiden name is Mary Baird and father Hugh Finnie.

The entire family is enumerated in the 1885 Iowa Census in the neighboring county of Lucas County, Iowa -- town of Cleveland in Jackson Township. Hugh Finnie is listed as a miner.
