Temple Smith-Martha Scott
Not found 1850,1860 1870 Ancestry.com census
In 1860 a Temple Smith was living in the household of Elias and Mary Scott near Gosport Montgomery township, Owen, IN. He was age 20 so matches best of any found on census index for age.
Familysearch.org resources were examined. An Ancestral file entry was found for Martha and Temple which placed her birth at Terre Haute, Vigo, IN in 1848. Martha was found on the 1880 census as described. Evidence from this census suggests the family was in Iowa about 1867 for birth of first child Chas? and for birth of third child Emma B. However their 2nd child , Dora Bell was b. in KS and therefore they could have been in KS in 1870. Unless a study is made of all the children to try to find out where in Iowa they were born(obituary or other personal record) it may be impossible to find the Iowa county where they may have lived. It may be possible there is a relative that they periodically stayed with in Iowa. If that person or family can be identified collateral result may answer some of your questions.
These post-war years were volatile and interesting. Temple is the appropriate age for civil war service but may not have lived to apply for a pension. Additional work is needed to ensure he did not serve as that could be a valuable source of information. In the case of Nebraska, special consideration was granted for homesteading for veterans. Land records and probates need to be studied as they may yield key information.
Seth Gallion of Bryan TX submitted some work recently to Pedigree Resource file on Familysearch.org that may help. He claims that they married in Osceola, Clearfield, PA. His entry unfortunately does not include sources so it can’t be evaluated.
