What was the info on the headstone, and where was it located? With those clues there would be time period and location to start searching census records.
Got luck and found some info anyhow.
1925 Iowa State Census, Waveland, Pottawattomie, Iowa
Johnson, Earnest, 36, head, b. IA, son of Mother: Eunice R Bushnel, b. Pennsylvania and Joseph D Johnson, b. Kentucky who were married in Illinoisin 1900 Ernest was in the same location living with an older brother William, and his widowed mother. She was b. Dec 1844 in PA to a CT father and PA mother. The older brother Wm, was b. Jan 1868 in IL, and was the only other living sibling.
1885 census has the family in Pottawattamie county, D joseph, age 47 or 49, b. KY, Eunice, 39, b. PA, Willis, 15, b. IL and James, 11, b. IL
