I am serching for information for the family of THOMAS WRIGHT CHILDS AND HIS WIFE E.M."MARTHA" WILCOX WHILE THEY LIVED IN IOWA ABT. 1857 TO 1859. Thomas was born in PA, October 16, 1816, Martha was born in New York abt 1827.
Thomas and Martha were married October 30, 1849 in Erie County, PA. (1850 Census - they lived in North East, Erie County, PA). They had two sons, Willie Wirt Childs (b. 1851) and Charles Fremont Childs (b. 1856). They left Erie County, PA between approximately, 1857 to 1859 and went to Iowa where Thomas Childs became an Indian Agent. A daughter Elizabeth Julia Childs was born in Iowa, May 27, 1859. (My great-grandmother) Elizabeth's mother Martha died during an epedemic in Iowa March 30, 1860.
(FAMILY NOTES - She died in Hanktown, Iowa ??) Thomas Childs returned to Fairview, Erie County, PA with his 2 sons and 10 month old daughter Elizabeth. His sister C. Julia Childs lived with him and helped to raise the children. Family has the bonnet and cape that the baby wore on the trip. I would like to find anything about their life there, a record of where Martha is buried, any records regarding Thomas Childs as an Indian Agent, the Native American tribe they lived with, etc. In 1880 Thomas Childs occupation was a carpenter he was 63 years old, living in Fairview, Erie Co., PA, where he died May 7, 1888Joan Mink, jmink@velocity.net
