In Response To: Ibarna, Iowa? Calf. County? (Teresa Klocke)

Hi,

Double 's' -- 'ss' -- in 'old time script' looks like what we would make as 'fs' -- the first s is made pretty much like our script 's' but goes way above the line and way below the line, making it look similar to our script 'f'. Undoubtedly that was Cass County, Iowa.

[Good examples of this are in images of land patents at the Genral Land Office, Bureau of Land Management, web site linked below.]

If the Brighton census posted is not the families you are looking for, there is a town 'Marne' in Cass Co. [northwest corner of the county on the Iowa map] that you might try. 'Come to think about it' -- an old script 'M' could probably be read as 'Ib'.

Also, you might look for a township instead of a town, maybe at the IAGenWeb, Cass Co web site?

Good luck,
Ralph
