Opal I. Hittle, 96, of Great Neck, New York, formerly of the Arispe, Shannon City, and Afton areas, died Saturday, November 26, 2011 at North Shore University Hospital in Manhasset, New York. Services will be held 2 p.m. Friday, December 9, 2011 at the Powers Funeral Home, 612 N. Dodge in Afton. Friends will be received from 1 p.m. to service time Friday at the funeral home. Memorials in lieu of flowers may be directed to the Arispe High School Alumni Banquet fund.
Opal Ilene Hittle, daughter of John William Hittle and Anna R. (Kester) Hittle, was born September 15, 1915 in Union County, Iowa. She graduated from Arispe High School in 1933. Then she went on to the State University of Iowa and received a B.A. degree in Home Economics in 1937. She later attended Iowa State College in 1941 and 1942 as a special student in Home Economics Education. She worked as a dietician and dining hall administrator at Iowa State University for many years. After retirement Opal moved to Great Neck, NY to care for her sister Vera and later her sister Doris. She had a dedicated caregiver for eleven years, Grace Poppe. There are no immediate survivors. Opal was preceded in death by her parents and three sisters: Vera Sears, Vada Hittle, and Doris Chicken.
