May 4, 1953, page 10Services for John H. Mateer 69, of 1339 Forest Ave., will be at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Evangelical United Brethren church in Afton, of which he was a member, with burial in the cemetery at Afton.
Mr. Mateer died of a heart ailment Sunday at Broadlawns General hospital, following a six month illness. In 1884 he was born in Afton to Henry Newton Mateer and Angeline Holt. For many years he was sexton of the Afton cemetery. He moved to Des Moines about three years ago.
Surviving are a son, Harold of Los Angeles, Cal.; a daughter Mrs. Etna Palmer of Des Moines; a brother, Arthur of Woodburn; three sisters, Mrs. Lottie Elliot of Afton, Mrs. Bessie Nye of Lincoln, Neb., and Mrs. Florence Gripp, with whom Mr. Mateer had been making his home; six grandchildren, and three great grandchildren.
