April 1, 1920, Afton, IowaAlvira Elizabeth Henderson Holt, daughter of John and Enora Henderson, was born in Quebec, Canada, October 20, 1831, and departed this life at Afton, Iowa, March 31, 1920 at the age of 88 years, 5 months, and 11 days.
She was united in marriage to Silas H. Holt in New York, July 14, 1848, to this union were born ten children, four daughters and six sons. Her husband and eight children having proceeded her to the better land, leaving one son, John W. Holt, and one daughter, Angeline Mateer, both of Afton; one sister, Angeline Hayward of Kalamazoo, Michigan, 12 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren to mourn her departure.
Early in life she was converted and united with the Christian church of Quincy, Illinois, and later transferred her membership to the Evangelical church of Afton where she remained a faithful member until death.
For the last nine years she has resided with her daughter, during which time she experienced much sickness, but through it all she was patient, always looking on the bright side, and while her place in the home will be vacant, it is a consolation to know that she has reached her goal, the Haven of Rest.
Funeral services are held this afternoon at 2:00 o’clock at the Evangelical church, conducted by the pastor, Rev. Skogsberg

In Hull, Ontario, Canada, Alvira Henderson played with the Indian children and spoke their language. When she grew older, she married Silas Holt, also of Hull, and they came to the U.S. following the rivers south to Illinois. Ten children were born, among them a son, John. As a young man, John went west as far as Afton, Iowa, where he settled.
