Opal Gordon, Creston

Opal K. Gordon, 71 of rural Creston, died of a stroke May 28, 1995, at Creston Manor Care Center.

Services were 10:30 a.m. May 30 at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home, 809 W. Montgomery Street. The Rev. Lucretia Parks officiated the service. Musice was by Lynn Baker, organist. Burial was in the Maple Hill Cemetery at Cromwell. Memorials may be directed to an education scholarship or the Cromwell Congregational United Church of Christ.

Pallbearers were Greg Buxton, Jim Sissell, Dr. Gary Cowell, Tracy Purdum, Glenn Tull and Roy Stroud.

Honory pallbearers were Robert Beecher, Dr. Ray Beecher, Jim Harsh, Russell Hobbs, Duane Murphy, Curtis Purdum, Duane Buxton, Paul DeRosear, Cliff Purdum, Dr. Jack Stream, Dr. W. W. Fisher and Fritz Frankling.

Mrs. Gordon was born July 22, 1923, at Cromwell to Guy and Winifred (McCafferty) Kilgore. She graduated from Cromwell High School in 1940, Creston Junior College in 1942, and received bachelor and master degrees in education from Drake University. On May 20, 1944, she married Robert F. Gordon in Creston, and he preceded her in death on Aug. 30, 1993.

She served as a teacher and principal in the Creston School System for 40 years, retiring July 1, 1994. She also taught school at Cromwell. She was a member of the Cromwell Congregational Church, PEO, and Delta Kappa Gamma Sorority.

Survivors include two nieces, Patricia (husband Jim) Williams of Coralville and Jane (husband Bill) Wolfe of St. Mary's; and two great nephews.

Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents and a sister, Ruby Andrews.
