Nellie Marie Turnbull was born October 16, 1916 in Shenandoah,
Iowa the daughter of William Spurlock and Ethel Atword Spurlock.
She grew up attending school in Shenandoah and in 1933, she was
united in marriage to Marion Turnbull when they were both 17 years
old. The couple moved to a farm south of Gravity in the mid 1930's.
To this loving union, a daughter Betty was born.
Nellie enjoyed being a farmer's wife, helping Marion however
she could. They later moved to a farm near Sharpsburg. In 1946,
Nellie attended beauty school in Maryville, Missouri. The family
then moved to Shenandoah where she opened a beauty shop, which
she ran out of her home. In 1949, they purchased a farm southwest
of Lenox.
Nellie was a beautician in Lenox for several years, having
worked for Ruth Ambrose, Ethel Bricker and Thelma Harvey.
After working in the beauty shop, Nellie returned home to help
Marion on the farm. In 1970, the couple retired and moved to
Arizona for three years, later returning to live in Cromwell. In
1987, Marion passed away. Nellie continued to live at home until
her health forced her to live at the Clearview Home in Clearfield.
Nellie was a wife and mother. She enjoyed quilting and
sewing, making most of the clothes for her daughter. She also
enjoyed cooking for her family. Nellie especially loved the time
spent in Arizona where she and Marion enjoyed visiting the area
flea markets.
During their years in Cromwell, she spent many hours talking
on the CB radio to others. Nellie was a member of the
Neighborhood Club.

Schaffer and husband Dean of Oilman City, Missouri; a brother,
Charlie Spurlock and wife Lucille of Spencer, Iowa; two
grandchildren, Greg and Jim Schaffer and three great grandchildren,
Cody, Autumn and Jeremy.
