Bernadine Stalker, 97, of Creston, passed away on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at the Creston Nursing and Rehab Center in Creston.
Services will be at 11 a.m. Wed. Oct. 30, 2013 at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Cromwell.

Burial will be at the Maple Hill Cemetery in Cromwell.

Open visitation will be from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. Tuesday at the Powers Funeral Home junction of highway 34 and 25 in Creston.

Family will receive friends from 10 a.m. Wed., until the 11 a.m. service time Wednesday at the Congregational United Church of Christ in Cromwell. Memorials can be directed to the Cromwell Congregational United Church of Christ or the Platte Center Church.

Bernadine B. (Burton) Stalker, daughter of Lester Leroy Burton and Mary Elizabeth (Smith) Burton, was born on Oct. 6, 1916 in Adams County, Iowa. She lived in Adams and Union County until about the age of ten. Her family moved to a farm northeast of Afton. She attended school at Dodge #7 Country School through the 8th grade. She graduated from Cromwell High School in 1937.

On Dec. 25, 1941, Bernadine married Lee Stalker at the Christian Church in Creston. They settled and farmed southwest of Creston. Back then, they planted and cultivated their crops with horses. Bernadine was a homemaker and farmwife. Lee died on April 9, 1976. Bernadine moved off the farm to Creston, and later to Crest Ridge Estates. In later years, her hobby was piecing quilts and wall hangings, and quilting. Bernadine loved little children. Not having a family of her own, she considered her nieces and nephews as her family. In her final years, Bernadine lost most of her sight.Bernadine was a member of the Congregational United Church of Christ in Cromwell, where she was active with the Church Quilters.

Survivors include her sister, Evelyn Griffey of Creston, and many nieces, nephews other family and friends.

Bernadine was preceded in death by her parents, Lester & Mary Burton, her parents-in-law, Charlie & Jessie Stalker, her husband Lee in 1976, her three brothers, Howard, Arlo and Melvin Burton and three sisters, Vada Burton, Beulah Irons and Dorothy Benefiel.
