Services for Alma Smith were held December 1, 1997 at the Larkin Funeral Home in Creston with Dr. Robert Pickerell of the First Christian Church officiating.
Music was provided by Lynn Baker as organist and Hannah Wilson, Deb Seitz, and Laura Hartman as vocalists.
Casket bearers were Tony Stuart, Mike Stuart, Billie Stuart, "Bud" Stuart, Monte Stuart, Joe Ahnen, Eric Shepherd, Mark Shepherd, Dustin Ahnen, and Mannie Shepherd.
Alma Lucille Smith, daughter of Mannie and Dolly Straight Johnston was born in Gravity, Iowa on September 22, 1918 and entered into rest at the Iowa Methodist Hospital in Des Moines, Iowa on November 27, 1997 at the age of 79 years, 2 months and 5 days.
Alma spent her early years in the Gravity community where she attended school until moving with her family to Lenox where she graduated. In April of 1934 she was united in marriage with Avery Stuart. Their marriage was blessed with the birth of three children: William, Janice, and Robert. Avery was killed while serving his country during World War II.
In 1946 she was united in marriage to Glen Ahnen. This marriage was blessed with the birth of one son, George.
In 1962 she was united in marriage with Orval J. Smith and they made their home in Creston. He preceded her in death in 1988.
Alma was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and the Women's Fellowship of the church. She was preceded in death by: her parents, husbands, two sons; Robert A. Stuart and George Ahnen, two brothers; Bernard and Kenneth
Johnston.
She leaves to mourn her passing; her son, William A. Stuart and wife Dorothy of Creston; her daughter, Janice Y. Shepherd of Creston, her foster daughter, Betty Westlake of Creston; 17 grandchildren and 21 great-grandchildren.
Also surviving are her two brothers; Kermit Johnston of Creston and Emerson "Sonny" Johnston of Lenox; her sister,Grace Weese of Creston and many other relatives and friends.
Interment was in the Graceland Cemetery in Creston.
Memorials may directed to the Green Valley Hospice.
