Sterling, Marling Ivan (Ike) -
Maring Ivan "Ike" Sterling was born March 29, 1920 at Lenox, Iowa, to David Christopher Sterling and Lillian Mary (Riley) Sterling.
He attended school at Lenox and Corning, and graduated from Corning High School.
On January 25, 1942, Ivan married Dorothy Sevier in Maryville, Missouri. To this union were born six children.
Ivan was a veteran of the U.S. Army for three years during World War II. He worked as a mail carrier for the U S Postal Service in the Creston area for 33 years. He retired in 1975.
Ivan and Dorothy were long time residents of the Creston and Corning area. They lived the past nine years in Lenox.
He was a lifetime member of the Creston V.F.W. and he was also a member of the Lenox American Legion. Ivan also belonged to the Camp Fire Sam's Camping Club.
Iva died Saturday, September 7, 1996, at the Ringgold County Hospital in Mount Ayr at the age of 76 years, 5 months, 8 days.
He was preceded in death by his parents, a son Robert Allen Sterling and two brothers-in-law.
Ivan is survived by his wife of 54 years Dorothy of Lenox; his children and their spouses: Patricia Hainline and husband Fred of Bloomfield, Iowa; Doug Sterling and wife Debbie of Tingley; Dennis Sterling and wife Elizabeth of Killeen, Texas; John Sterling and wife Patti of Tingley; Nancy Rolfe and husband Pat of Salt Lake City, Utah; and Helen Litscher and husband Ron of Hoopsa, Calif.; sisters Bernice Brown of Corning; Maxine Boyd of Creston; and Betty Lundhigh of Tulsa, Okla.; seventeen grandchildren; seven greatgrandchildren; nieces and nephews and other relatives and friends.
Funeral services were held, September 11 at 10:00 a.m. at the Lenox United Methodist Church with Pastor Audrey Westendorf officiating.
Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery in Creston. Visitation was held Tuesday evening at Coen-Beaty Funeral Home in Lenox. Full military rites were provided by the Creston V.F.W.
Serving as pallbearers were Terry Hainline, Jasper Ambrose, Oren Jeter, Raymond Trost, Kenneth Black and Russell Woods.
Kathryn Wilson, Marilyn Beck and Billie Jean Barker provided music.
A memorial has been established in his name.
Coen-Beaty Funeral Home of Lenox was in charge of the arrangements.
