Riley, Verda Elizabeth Casey -
Verda Elizabeth Riley of 804 South Cedar, Creston, Iowa died at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston Sunday,July 11. She was eighty-nine years of age.
The daughter of Franklin A. and Adella Miller Casey, Verda was born July 27, 1892 in Mercer Township, Adams County, Iowa.
On February 18, 1914, she was united in marriage with Roy Riley in Mercer Township, Adams County. Verda lived in Adams County until moving to Creston in 1945. She was a homemaker and a member of the Salem Church of the Brethren.
Preceding her in death were her husband in 1963, a grandson, one sister, and two brothers.
Survivors include a daughter, Lola Purviance and husband, Dale of Afton; a son, LeRoy Riley of Afton; one grandchild; two great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
Services were held Wednesday, July 14 at 1:30 p.m. at the Stroud-Lindsay Funeral Home in Afton with Reverend Elmer West officiating.
The selections played by Mrs. Helen Ricks, organist, were "How Great Thou Art" and "Sunrise, Sunset".
Casket bearers were Bernard Riley, Carl Riley, Elvin Riley, John Riley, LaVerne Riley, and Eugene Swartz.
Interment was in the Greenlawn Cemetery at Afton.
A memorial has been established to the Afton Care Center.

Verda Elizabeth Casey Riley, daughter of Franklin A. and Adella Miller Casey, was born in Mercer Township, Adams County, on July 27. 1892 and passed away at the Greater Community Hospital in Creston, Iowa on July 11, 1982, lacking a few days of being ninety years of age.
Services were held July 14 at the Stroud-Lindsay Funeral Home in Afton with the Reverend Elmer West officiating.
Interment was in the Greenlawn Cemetery at Afton.
She grew to womanhood in Mercer Township where she was born. She was married to Roy Riley on February 18, 1914.
They lived on a farm near Lenox until they moved to the edge of Creston on a small farm in 1945, where she maintained her home until breaking her hip in September, 1981.
To this union two children were born, Lola Purviance and LeRoy Riley, both of Afton.
Mrs. Riley was a member of the Salem Church of the Brethren near Lenox and remained faithful to her Maker the rest of her life.
Preceding her in death were her husband, Roy, in 1963; a grandson, Larry Riley, in 1961; one sister, Faye and two brothers, Clifford and Lloyd.
She leaves to mourn her passing her daughter, Lola and husband, Dale; her son, LeRoy and wife, Lottie; a grandson,Lonny and wife, Diane; two great grandchildren, Jason and Jodi, of whom were her pride and joy; a niece, Darline Riley,of California, who became a special part of the family as she had made her home with them for a time; a number of other nieces and nephews of which she was very fond, along with a host of other relatives and friends.
Verda was truly a farm wife and homemaker. She enjoyed milking cows, taking care of her chickens and flowers.
She was a loving and caring Mother always mindful of others and their concerns,lending a helping hand wherever possible. She will be sadly missed by her family and friends.
