Obituaries Powers Funeral Home

Vera Roan, 78, of Murray, passed away Friday, July 27, 2012 at the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston, Ia.

Services will be 1:30 p.m. Wed, August 1, 2012 at the Powers Funeral Home 612 N. Dodge in Afton. Pastor Dwayne Henrichs will officiate. Burial will be at Murray Cemetery, near Murray.

Open visitation will be from 2 to 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 6 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. Memorials may be directed to the Greater Regional Hospice Home in Creston. Online condolences may be given at www.powersfh.com.

Vera Jane (Eckels) Roan, daughter of H. Miner Eckels and Vera E. (Bauman) Eckels was born on May 31, 1934 in Lake City, Iowa. She was educated in Thayer graduating from Thayer High School in 1952. On March 21, 1954, Vera married Richard R. Roan in Thayer, Iowa. Vera was a switch operator in Thayer during Richard's time of military service. She worked as a farmwife and homemaker most of her life, helping Richard on the farm milking cows and raising hogs. They lived in Thayer, until moving to the farm south of Thayer in 1966. Vera worked at the Family Table Restaurant in Osceola, retiring in 2007. Richard died in 1999. Vera continued to live on the farm. Vera enjoyed her birds, her cat Peaches, gardening and spending time with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, who also enjoyed her special cookies.

Survivors include her two sons, Mike (Lori) Roan of Murray and Mark Roan of Osceola; a daughter, Kathy (husband Willie) Smith of Afton; seven grandchildren, Adam and Jake Roan, Jennifer (Andy Jackson) Smith, Jessica (Clinton Haight) Smith, Ashley, Matt (wife Cass) and Morgan Roan; eight great-grandchildren; two brothers-in-law, Robert Simon of Winterset and Donald (wife Connie) Roan of Afton; two sisters-in-law, Marjorie (husband Pete) Repplinger of Creston and Marilyn Clark of Indianola; and other relatives and friends.

Vera was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard, sister, Elizabeth Simon and a brother, Herron Miner, Jr., who died in the Korean War in 1952.
