Jeremiah R. Hayes was born in Baltimore county, Maryland, May in Kent, April 21, 1930, at the age of 73 years, 11 months, and 4 days. [?] He was united in marriage to Laura V. Mallick, September 4, 1874. To this union was born one son, Charles L. This son and his mother were at the bedside when he died.

He moved to Cromwell, Iowa November 25, 1880, where he resided until he moved to Kent where he built a home at which place he spent the rest of his life.
For many years the deceased was engaged in the grocery and meat business in Kent, during the early years of which he and his son did their own slaughtering, buying the meat on foot in the territory for miles around Kent.

Jerry as he was ultimately known throughout the community, was respected and admired by all who knew him, always ready to perform his part and to make the best of life whether in storm or sunshine.
He was one of the charter members of the Kent lodge No. 666 I. O. O. F., his name appearing at the top of the list, and in which order he took an active interest during all the years while yet his health and strength remained, and of which he continued a member until the end. He was also a member of the M. W. A.
During the recent months as disease fastened itself upon him his loving wife was always at his side, faithful to the end as she had always been during the more than fifty-five years of their wedded life.
He leaves his wife, a son, one sister, and one granddaughter.
Funeral services were held at the family home in Kent Wednesday afternoon, conducted by the Rev. Arthur Henry, pastor of the M. E. church, and burial was made in the Cromwell cemetery. The Odd Fellows of Kent and Cromwell were
in charge of the funeral.
