Sample, Mary Bell -
Mrs. Mary Sample, a resident of Union county since 1865, died Tuesday, April 22, at her home near Kent. Funeral services were held at two o'clock Thursday afternoon at the family home conducted by Rev. Arthur Henry, pastor of the Kent M. E. church, and burial was made in the Morgan cemetery. Mrs. Sample was one of the oldest pioneers of the county.

Mary Bell was born near Belfast, Ireland. When a little child she came with her parents to America settling in St. Louis, Missouri where shortly afterward she was bereft of her mother in that awful cholera scourge which swept that city. She then went to Keokuk, Iowa, where she made her home with a sister, Mrs. Margaret Steele until her marriage to James Sample, April 17, 1856. To this union were born four children, Mary A., William, Carrie and James.

She came to Union county on March 10. 1865 where she has been a continuous resident until the time of her death. Her daughter, Mary, died September 12. 1914, and two years later. September 15, 1916, her husband passed away.

She was a member of the Platte Center Presbyterian church, and at the time of their golden jubilee she was the only surviving charter member. Greetings were sent to her from the church at that tune. Mrs. Sample was a faithful mother and considered no sacrifice too great to make for her family. She
was highly respected and loved by all who knew her.

She has left a vacancy which no one can fill. The relatives, neighbors and friends feel that with the passing of Aunt Mary, we have lost a good woman. She leaves to morn her loss, two sons, one daughter, one granddaughter and two great grandsons. Also two sisters, Mrs. Elizabeth Bradshaw of Creston and Mrs. Margaret Stelle of Keokuk, two half sisters, Mrs. Emma Johnson of Creston and Mrs. Mary Reed of Omaha, Nebraska, two half brothers, Joseph Bell of Sioux City, Iowa and William Bell of Grant City, Missouri.
