Elma Huss, 76, of Afton Dies

Afton- Mrs. Elma L Huss, 76, of Afton, died at 10:45 a.m. Monday at Greater Community Hospital in Creston. She had been in ill health for some time.

She was a daughter of William and Dora (Vaught) Smith and was born in Clarke County on Nov. 18, 1891. She had lived in the Afton area most of her life and was a longtime member of the Afton Methodist Church.

Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Jake (Mary) Van Heeswyk of Afton and Mrs. Everett (Sylvia) Benedict of Stuart, two sons, Harold Craig of Afton and Ralph Craig of Plattsmouth, Nebr., 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by a sister, a brother, three grandchildren, her husband, Walter Groesbeck in 1956 and her husband Ira Huss in 1962.

Funeral services will be held at 2 p.m. Wednesday at the Stroud Funeral Home in Afton, Rev. Dwight Bonham will officiate. Burial will be in the Groesbeck cemetery, northeast of Afton.

Elma L. Huss, 76 of Afton passed away at the
Greater Community Hospital at 10:45 Monday, May 20, 1968. She had been in ill health for several months.

Funeral services were held today (Wednesday) at 2 p.m. at the Stroud Funeral Home in Afton, with Rev. Dwight Bonham officiating. Burial was in Groesbeck Cemetery, northeast of Afton.

Elma L. Smith was born November 18, 1891, the daughter of Wm. and Dora (Vaught) Smith, in Clarke County. She lived most of her life in the Afton area. She was a long time member of the Afton Methodist church.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. Jake (Mary) Van Heeswyk of Afton and Mrs. Everett (Sylvia) Benedict of Stuart, two sons, Harold Craig of Afton and Ralph Craig of Plattsmouth, Nebr., 18 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by one sister, one brother, 3 grandchildren and husbands, Walter Groesbeck Oct. 1956 and Ira Huss 1962.

Obituary: Elma Smith Huss

Elma L. Smith, daughter of William H. and Dora (Vaught) Smith, was born in Clark County in November 18, 1891 and passed away at the Greater Community Hospital at Creston, Iowa on May 20, 1968 at the age of 76 years, six months and two days. She spent most of her life in and around Afton.

She was united in marriage to Russell E. Craig on November 28, 1912. To this union were born two sons, Harold of Afton and Ralph of Plattsmouth, Nebraska.

She was united in marriage to Walter Groesbeck on July 14, 1926. To this union were born two daughters Mrs. Everett (Sylvia) Benedict of Stuart, Iowa and Mrs. Jake (Mary) Van Heeswyk of Afton. He preceded her in death in 1956.

On December 8, 1959 she was united in marriage Huss, who preceded her in death on July 17, 1962.

Those left to mourn her passing are two sons, Harold and Ralph, two daughters, Mary and Sylvia, eighteen grandchildren, twelve great grandchildren, two step-daughters, four nieces and a host of relatives and friends. One brother, one sister and three grandchildren preceded her in death.

She was a kind and loving wife and mother. Her pride and joy were her children and grandchildren.

She joined the Methodist church in Afton, Iowa at an early age where her membership has been retained. She was always active in the Church as long as her health permitted.

Funeral services were held Wednesday, May 22, 1968 at 2:00 p.m. at the Stroud Funeral Home in Afton, with Rev. Dwight Donham, pastor of the Afton Methodist Church, officiating. She was laid to rest in the Groesbeck Cemetery, northeast of Afton.

The organist was Mrs. Carl Huss. Bearers were Leslie Van Heeswyk, Walter Craig, Harvey Van Heeswyk, Ronald Benedict, William Craig, and Harold Benedict.
