Toland, Josephine Sanders -
Mrs. Josephine Toland passed away at 1:15 a. m. Friday, April 26 [1940] at her home in Lenox at the age of 81 years, 3 months and 21 days. Mrs. Toland had not been in good health for sometime, but was confined to her bed only the last week.
Funeral services were held at the Methodist church Sunday, April 28 [1940] at 2 o'clock in charge of the Rev. F. J. Robins. Burial was made in the Morgan cemetery near Kent.
Josephine Sanders was born January 7, 1859 near Indianapolis, Indiana. Her father having died when, she was a child, she came with her mother to Illinois and lived near Industry for a number of years. At the age of 17 she was married to Knos Biley Toland at Bosworth, Mo.
Ten children were born, namely: Bertha and Earl, who died in infancy; Walter J. of Des Moines; Huldah Pearson of Lenox; Willie R., Industry, Ill.; Branch W., Lenox; Jesse E., Kansas City, Mo.; Leslie V. and Ruth Moore, Lenox; and Vern B., who died September 24, 1936. Mrs. Toland was preceded in death also by her husband who died October 20, 1934.
Mrs. Toland was a member of the Calvary church in the community in which she lived for many years, Mr. and Mrs. Toland came to Iowa 37 years ago. They lived on a farm near Lenox for many years before moving to Lenox. Surviving besides her seven children are 13 grandchildren, eight great grandchildren and a sister, Mrs. Laura Morrow of Grandis, New Mexico.
