DOROTHY ROEDER, AFTON

Dorothy Roeder, 84, of Afton died Thursday, March 31, 2011, at Afton Care Center in Afton.

Services were held Monday, April 4, at St. Edward’’s Catholic Church in Afton, with Father Joseph Pins officiating. Burial was at the Calvary Cemetery in Creston. A Rosary Service was held Sunday evening at the Powers Funeral Home in Afton. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the new Afton Community Center.

Dorothy Pauline (Blair) Roeder, the daughter of Grover Gentry Blair and Mabel B. (Shoemaker) Blair was born Feb. 10, 1927, in Afton, Iowa. She graduated from Afton High School in 1945. On July 30, 1945, Dorothy was united in marriage to Paul Leonard Roeder in Afton. They settled south of Afton, where Dorothy was a homemaker and where they farmed for 65 years. In the 1970s, she was the Historian for 1st Blair Chapel Cemetery. She also loved contributing her time and effort to the Creston Historical Society’’s house and museum where she helped set up the displays with her unique ability to recognize the history behind each item.

She was preceded in death by her husband; a son, Ted Roeder; a granddaughter, Annette Bradley; and a brother, Harold Blair.

She is survived by five daughters: Debbie Bradley of Lenox, Elaine McGuire of Arvada, Colo., Becki Newell of Lake Ozark, Mo., Louise Berdine of Afton and Lynne Chriss of Westlake, Ohio; her brother Don Blair of San Antonio, Texas; her sister Nina Sullivan of Jacksonville, Al.; 11 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
