C. P. Owens, Pioneer, Died last Saturday

Lived in Pleasant Township for 68 Years; Has been Active in Community Affairs

Phil Owens, as he was known to a large circle of friends, passed away last Saturday morning. He has lived a long and useful life, most all of which had been spent in Pleasant Township, southeast of Afton. He came there when a lad of eleven years and for 68 years he has assisted in making that a better place in which to live, giving much of his time to community affairs and assisting those who were in need. For some time he has not been well, his heart bothering him, but just a few days before his death he was assisting an aged and needy neighbor in an effort to secure an old age pension.

He was always pleased to assist when people came to him with their problems and was never too busy to help them. A congenial companion, he made friends easily and because of his sterling character he retained those friendships throughout the years. He loved life and was rewarded with a strong body and mind which served him until the end. Death came peacefully as he desired it, his work on earth has ended, but his memory will live long.

Here is a short sketch of his life:

Charles Phillip Owens, son of Thomas and Margaret Owens, was born in Boston, Mass., Dec. 28, 1857, and passed away at the home of his son Terrence, Oct. 9, 1937, aged 79 years, 9 months, and 12 days.

When eleven years of age he came to Iowa with his parents who settled in Sand Creek Township. In 1876 he was united in marriage to Launna Syp who passed away in April 1903.

To this union were born three sons, James Thomas who died July 15, 1936; Irvine Ross of Rozet, Wyo., and Terrence Louis of Afton.

He was a farmer and stock man and took an active part in the welfare of the community; was a respected citizen, a good neighbor and a loving husband and father.

He leaves to mourn their loss two sons, four grandchildren, Mrs. Bert Carter, Lead, S. Dak.; Merrill Owens, Kellog, Idaho; Elizabeth and Margaret Owens of Afton, also three great-grandchildren, Jerry and Joyce Carter and Billy Owens.

He also leaves one sister, Mrs. Bell Hoover of Creston, besides a host of neighbors and friends.

Those attending the funeral from a distance were Irvine Owens, Rozet, Wyo.; Mrs. Vilna Teeter, Batavia, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Cecil Black, Ledyard, Ia.; Mrs. Elizabeth Beakler, Humeston, Ia.; Mr. and Mrs. Mervin Hagle, Corning, Ia.; and Mr. and Mrs. Clark Shifflett, Omaha, Nebr.
Funeral services were held Oct. 11, 1937, at St. Edwards church, Afton, Iowa, conducted by Father McGuiness. Burial was a Abel cemetery.
