Goldie Lorene Shell, daughter of Charles Carlwin and Etta May Walker Shell, was born December 10, 1914, at Riley, Kansas, and passed away September 19, 1988, at the home of her daughter, Karen, in Fort Dodge, Iowa, at the age of 73 years, 9 months and 9 days.
In 1918, the family moved to a farm near Brooks, Iowa, to be near her Grandpa and Grandma Walker. In 1920, they moved to Brooks, Iowa, where she attended primary school. Goldie graduated from Corning High School with the class of 1932, with a Normal Training (Teachers) Certificate, but was too young to teach. The next year she taught in Middle Valley, a coal mining district.
On October 6, 1934, she was united in marriage with Ansell Lee White in Kansas City, Missouri. To this union were born five children; Gordon Lee, Phillip Leon, Connie Elaine, Karen Jo, and Kaira Kay. The early years of their marriage were spent in Adams County, Iowa, before moving to Creston, Iowa in 1949.
Busy with a family of five children, she found time to become active in numerous school and community organizations. One of her favorite projects was the preparation of dolls for distibution by the Creston Volunteer Fire Department to area children each Christmas. Goldie was past president of the Franklin Parent Teacher Association and of the Creston PTA Council; a member of the Franklin Mother's Study Club, the Girl Scout Council and Creston Women's Club. She served as a 4-H leader for many years and was chosen as an honorary member of the Union County 4-H Girls. She taught a Sunday School class of third and fourth graders at the First Congegational Church. Goldie was a member and past president of the Creston School Board and served on numeous committees supporting the construction of new schools. She was a District Director of Southwest Iowa National Campers and Hikers Association and a member of the Creston Cozy Campers. She was a member of St. John's United Church of Christ and the Women's Fellowship.
Survivors include two sons, Gordon of Des Moines, Iowa; Phillip and wife, Pat of Mesa, Arizona; and three daughters, Connie White of Creston, Iowa; Karen and husband, Doral Colton of Fort Dodge, Iowa and Kaira and husband, Stephen Daughton of Onalaska, Wisconsin, and a daughter-in-law, Donna White of Des Moines, Iowa. Also eight grandchildren, Debra and Kris White of Des Moines, Iowa; Jim White of Chicago, Illinois; Stacey and husband, Rod Shields of Mount Ayr, Iowa; Diane and husband, Brian Nieman of Phoenix, Arizona; Lisa White of Galveston, Texas, and Michael and Brian Colton of Fort Dodge, Iowa. Also four great-grandchildren: Andy, Aleha and Aaron Shields of Mount Ayr, Iowa and Trenton, Nieman of Phoenix, Arizona. Goldie was preceded in death by her husband, her parents, two sisters and two brothers.
Goldie's greatest love was the children she came in contact with while serving the community and school and the quality time she spent with her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She will greatly missed by all who knew her, but her memory will live on in the memorial established for the Creston Community Schools.
Funeral services were held Thursday, September 22, 1988, at the Coen-Beaty Funeral Home with Rev. George Campbell and W. T. "Bill" McLaughlin officiating. Burial was in the Graceland Cemetery in Creston. Pallbearers were Ron Hudson, James Hamilton, Dale Keating, John Hays, Louis Utterback and Harold Roberts. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Creston Cozy Campers. Music was provided by Donna Wolfe and Lynn Baker.
