Melvin H. Shipley, 69, Spanish American war veteran and former Creston Grocer, died yesterday at Hines Hospital, Hines, Ill., following an illness of eight year.

Funeral services will be tomorrow at 2:30 p.m. at the Roland funeral home, with burial in Graceland cemetery.

Mr. Shipley was born in Lostant, Ill., a son of Mr. and Mrs. James Shipley, moving to Creston at the age of two and living here until he became seriously ill last July. He was transferred to the Hines hospital from Veterans hospital in Des Moines several months ago.

He is survived by his wife, the former Effie Myers, whom he married in Creston May 9, 1900 and six children, Darrel and A. J. Shipley of Des Moines, Melvin of Falls city, Nebr., Paul of Davenport, and Mrs. J. W. Adamson of Afton and Mrs. H. E. Margerum of East Moline, Ill.

Surviving brothers are Harry of Glendora, Calif., and Frank of Keller, Mich. A Sister, mrs. Walter Schuler, lives in Kansas City, Mo.

He had two years of war service enlisting in Creston in 1898 servicing with Co. G.

He was a member of the Methodist Church.
