Dan Van Ness Groesbeck was born in Lee Co., Iowa, Nov. 19, 1842 and died at his home in Dodge township, Union Co., Iowa, March 8, 1921 after a long illness borne with Christian faith and fortitude. His age was seventy-eight years, three months and nineteen days. The deceased came with her parents to Union Co., Iowa in 1854 and on March 5th, 1868 he was united in marriage to Sarah Fenner of Ottumwa. To this union were born four children all of whom are still living. Mrs. Louise Norin of Ritzville, Washington, Herman Groesbeck, of Afton and Ben Groesbeck of Afton and Arthur Groesbeck of Ohiowa, Neb. He is also survived by one sister, Mrs Cordelia Ball of Omaha, Nebr, and three grandchildren, Ada and George Groesbeck who have lived in his home and Vera Louise Groesbeck of Ohiowa, Nebr.

Deceased was one of the first settlers in Dodge Twp. and during his long life here he watched with interest the growth of the county and its affairs. He was ever a most conscientious boy and man and in his young manhood became a Christian and a member of the Baptist Church. He never faltered but was always a stanch leader in whatever he believed to be the right.

Funeral services were held at his home, conducted by Rev. Osborn of Macksburg and Emmanuel, who gave a fine discount full of sympathy, hope and comfort, the text being, Rev. 14, 13th verse "Blessed are the dead which die in the Lord----they may rest from their labours; and their works do follow them."

The remains were laid to rest in the Ashland Cemetery by the side of his wife (who had preceded him seven years) and only a few feet from where their first log cabin was built on coming to this county sixty seven years ago.
