Jonathan C. Donner was born in DeWitt County, Illinois, July 25, 1848. He was married to Virginia Linson November 15, 1874. To this union were born seven children, the two oldest dying in infancy.

In 1877 he removed with his family to Missouri and in 1879 to Lincoln Township, this county. In the spring of 1902 he removed to Minnesota but returned to Iowa in the fall of 1903, and died near Afton, June 25, 1904, aged 55 years and 11 months.

Three daughters married and one daughter and son with the stricken mother, four brothers, and two sisters, with a large circle of friends are left to mourn for the loved one gone. A clean, honest, upright man, a good neighbor, a kind father, and loving husband, his loss will be deeply felt. The large concourse that attended the last sad Service, attested the esteem in which he was held by those who knew him best. The funeral was from the Baptist church, conducted by the pastor assisted by Dr. Pilcher of the M.E. church and Rev. Pierce of the Emanuel Baptist church, and interment was made in the Afton cemetery."

Post Note: Jonathan is the son of Greenberry and Mary (Scantling) Donner, Brothers: William S., Albert G.. Joseph Levi, and Sterling C. Donner; Sisters: Hannah Ellen (Campbell), Nancy Louisa (Conger), and Armilda Pink (Hastings). Jonathan's Children are, Daughters: Flora Mae (Arnold), Cora Belle(Clough), Pearl L. (Briggs), and Almyra (Berry); one son Melvin Clarence Donner.
