ERWIN BARKALOW

Erwin "Tiny" Barkalow, 70, of Creston died July 18, 2008, at Skiff Medical Center in Newton.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, July 22, at Holy Spirit Catholic Church in Creston. The Rev. Joseph Pins will officiate. Burial will be Calvary Cemetery, west of Creston. Visitation will be 2 to 8 p.m. today at Powers Funeral Homes, junction of Highways 34 and 25 with the family present 6 to 8 p.m. and Christian Wake service 7:30 p.m. at the funeral home. Erwin John Barkalow, son of Gladys[Hulse]and John Henry Barkalow, was born Jan. 4, 1938, in Gary, Ind. He graduated from Creston High School in 1956. He worked as a forester and sold seed with his father throughout the Midwest until 1961.

On May 20, 1961, he married Roberta Ann Repplinger in Creston. Tiny then worked for Kens's Spray Service from 1961-1968, Stearns Electric as a small engine mechanic 1968-1989 and Creston Farm and Home from 1989 until retiring in 2003. He and Roberta made their home on a farm southwest of Cromwell for 47 years, where they operated Barkalow Gardens 1970-2007. In 1989, they were named Iowa Tree Farmers of the year.

Tiny was a member of Holy Spirit Catholic Church, Iowa Tree Farmers Association, Little League Board and Creston Booster Club.
Survivors include his daughters, Theresa [husband Tim] Hake of Ionia and Jenny [husband Chris] Clausen of Ida Grove; son Matt [wife Shellie] Barkalow of Colfax; grandchildren, Corey and Parker Clausen, Bob Barkalow and four others]; sisters-in-law, Barbara and Pat Barkalow, both of Creston; aunt Agnes Hulse of Alberta, Canada, and many nieces and nephews.

Tiny was preceded in death by his parents; wife on Jan. 15, 2008, and brothers, Merle and Derald Barkalow.
