“Died at his residence in the east part of Cromwell, John H. Brown, Wednesday, October 15, 1902, rather suddenly with asthma. Mr. Brown has been in poor health for the past few years and has made two or three trips to the west for the benefit of his health and was making arrangements to go to California in a short time for the same purpose. John H[amilton] Brown was born near Edinburgh, Scotland, Feb. 1, 1834 and came to this country about 1851, settling in Pennsylvania, for a short time, then moving to Canton, Ohio, where he was married to Miss Mary A. Murphy, of that city in 1856. A few years later they moved to Illinois and in 1868 moved to a farm about two miles northeast of Cromwell. About nine years ago, as he had poor health, he retired from farm life and moved to Cromwell which place was his home at the time of his death. Mr. Brown was one of the earliest settlers of this part of the country having lived here nearly 35 years. In the early days, he, in company with his brother-in-law, Henry Murphy, operated a grist mill in Cromwell for a few years. Ten children were born to this union, eight of whom with the wife and eight grandchildren, a brother and three sisters survive to mourn the loss of the deceased. The following are the children who were present at the funeral: James Brown of Orient, Mrs. C. H. Thomas of Kent, Richard Brown of Creston, Howard Brown of Macksburg, and Mrs. W. W. Burns, Miss Mary A. Brown, Mrs. Harry C. Harrison and Henry M. Brown of Cromwell. The funeral was held at the residence at 2 o’clock Friday afternoon [October 17], the services being conducted by Rev. J. B. Stanton, assisted by Rev. W. T. Bartle of California, and the interment was made in the Cromwell cemetery. Three songs were rendered by a quartette composed of W. S. Mills and Dr. O. S. Barbee [sp?] and Misses Fairy Sparr and Francis Harrison with Miss Edith Ours as organist. Prayer was made by Rev. Bartle and after the sermon by Rev. Stanton, Rev. Bartle made a few personal remarks as he was an old acquaintance and neighbor of Mr. Brown, but of late years has been living in California but is now here on a visit. Among those we noticed present from abroad were a brother and sister from Newton, Iowa, T. S. H. Daugherty and wife, Mr. Graham and wife, Mr. Wilson and wife, John Harmon, wife and daughter, Hon. J. B. Harsh, Operator Fogg, C. H. Bacon, A. M. Bay, John Hendricks, James Gault, James Lewis, Misses Ethel Woodhull, Eliza Daniels and Lou Bay, all from Creston. The friends have the sympathy of the community, as was shown by the large attendance at the funeral.” END
