Funeral of Mrs. Sarah Winkler

The funeral of Mrs. Sarah Winkler was held at the residence of N. W. Rowell on Friday morning. The services were conducted by the Rev. A. W. Amrstrong, pastor of the Methodist church, assisted by Rev. G. J. Nixon. The funeral was largely attended by the many friends who had held Mrs. Winkler in high esteem for many years. The remains were interred in the Afton cemetery. The utmost sympathy is felt for the sorrowing relatives. We have secured an interesting sketch of the long life of the deceased which is here given:

Sarah Winkler, [or Aunt Sarah as she was universally known] was born at Parkersburg, Va., in 1804. Her mother and the mother of Gen. Stonewall Jackson were sisters. Her father Daniel Rowell, was a revolutionary soldier. In 1815 her parents moved to Athens county, Ohio, when the forests of that country were unbroken. In 1840 she with her parents moved to Edgar county, Ill., where her parents died and where she was married to Winkler. In 1849 she came to her brother’s home in Wapello county this state, being then a widow with one child, a son. She made her home with her brother William Rowell until his death in 1858, and then with her nephew C. B. Rowell until 1868. Since that time she has found a home with the family of N. W. Rowell. Her son John W. Winkler enlisted in Co. K, 15th Iowa Vol. Infantry, October 1, 1861 and fell at the battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862. She was the last surviving member of her father’s family, several of them having lived four score and ten years.
