In Memorian

William Chenowith Nixon was born in Morrison county, Pa., Feb. 11, 1821. He married Miss Amanda Butters of the same county June 6, 1848. In 1851 he moved to Hocking county, Inidana, where he lived until he came to Union county, Iowa, 25 years ago, where hedied Oct. 9, 1890, leaving a wife and two children, M. S. Nixon and Mrs. Emma Moore. He suffered many years with what was thought to be bone crysipelas. He had his left leg amputated above the knee about 17 years ago and since has been closely confined to his home but was never heard to complain. His last sickness lasted about ten days, but he has thought for months that the end was near at hand and arranged his business affairs, gave directions for his funeral, selecting the scripture to be read, etc. He united with the Methodist Episcopal church in 1845 and continued a member until summoned to the Church Triumphant. During his church left he often occupied positions of trust and responsibility, and we doubt not he discharged these duties faithfully, for from earliest boyhood he was sincerely free from the faults and follies usually considered inseperable from that period in life. My brother and I were especially chums in a large family of boys and girls, and looking back over those early years I well remember his straight-forward, many ways. When we were boyx intoxicants of various kinds were manufactures all around us and freely used. But seeing the effects almost daily he seemed to have decided thus early in life that they were hurtful in many ways and refused to conform to the customs of drinking and treatling on all occassions and I never knew him to use them as a beverage after this decision. A prominent trait even thus early was truthfulness. In our disputes as children, if William was present we apealed to him and his decision was the end of the controversy. And I noticed that father and mother in doubtful cases among children usually were governed by his statement of the facts. These traits he retained through life and doubless is now one of those who have ascended the hill of the Lord and stand in his holy temple. Geo. J. Nixon
