MEMORIAL FOR "JOHNNY GREEN"
Minature Log Cabin to be erected at Marshalltown for Famous Indian Chief.
Marshalltown , Dec. 7 - overlooking the Iowa River, on a picturesque bluff back of the Iowa Soldier's home, there soon is to be erected a minature log cabin to the memory of "Johnny Green", the beloved chief of the Meskwakis, who died near the spot where he was buried in 1868. Green, known as the friend of the white man was camping along the Iowa river, his favorite hunting and fishing ground. While he sickened there and died and his body was laid to rest with the ceremonial rites known to the red man in the early days.
The spot where Green was buried is now on state land, directly back of the residence occupied by Commander C.C. Horton. Colonel Horton happening to learn of the burial place through okd residents, thought it fitting that a marker of some kind indicate the grave, and will erect the little cabin with a suitable inscription. Green has a son Ni-Pa-Kwa {Buck Green} who is still living on the reservation east here in Tama County.
