MRS. SADEE A. BALFOUR

Funeral services for Mrs. Sadee A. Balfour, 96, longtime Tama and Toledo resident, were held from the Henderson-Overton Funeral Home, Toledo, at 1:30 p.m. Tuesday afternoon, with Rev. Walter Martin, Victor, former pastor of Haven Community Church, Officiating. Dolores Harris was organist and accompanied. Wilma Jean Frandsen, vocalist.

Pallbearers were Rudolph Pingel, Larry Hopper, Leland Kaloupek, Willard Balfour, George Novotny and Darrell Peska. Burial was in Wooklawn, Cometary, Toledo.

Mrs. Balfour died in Marshalltown Medical & Surgical Center, Saturday, Feb. 10, 1990, where she was admitted from Bethesda Care Center on Feb. 6. She had been a resident of the Care Center since, June, 1989.

She was born March 1, 1893, in Richland Township, Tama county, Daughter of Enos E. and Mary Hartman Smith. She attended a rural school in the area of her birth and moved with her family to Chelsea at the age of 12, where she attend the Chelsea High School.

On May 17, 1916, she married Jay Balfour at Marion and the couple lived on a farm east of Toledo eight years. They then moved to Tama and in 1930, Jay and Sadee bought Walt Dumbauld lunch room in the Dolash building, McClellan Street, obtaining the first beer permit in Tama County, naming it Jay's Place. In 1943, the business was moved to Fourth Street and they sold it in 1946. The Balfours' were in the restaurant and tavern business later, buying John Kubalek's tavern, which they operated two years, until 1951. In 1952 Jay was clerk and later manager of the Toledo State Liquor Store, until his retirement. At that time they resided in a mobile home at 705 E. Carleton, Toledo.

After Jay's death, June 16, 1967, Sadee made her home at the Toledo Hotel for many years, until entering Bethesda Care Center. she was a 50-year member and past Oracle of the Royal Neighbors Lodge, charter member of the Eagle's Axillary No. 2929, Tama-Toledo and Diamond Link Rebekah Lodge No. 176, I.O.O.F.

Survivors include nieces and nephews.
