Fred Hurt, 84, dies in hospital; Thursday rites
Fred Hurt, 84, well-known retired Highland township farmer, Tama resident since 1946, died in Community Hospital East, Marshalltown, at 8:30 a.m.Tuesday, March 25. He had been admitted just three days prior to his death, which was unexpected.
Funeral services will be held from the Mason-Hand Funeral Home at 2:00 o'clock today (Thursday), with Rev. Harland T. Gant, pastor of United Methodist church, officiation. Mrs. Lloyd Strine, organist, will accompany James Black, soloist. Selections are “Abide With Me” and “There Are Loved Ones in The Glory.”
Pallbearers will be Louis and Arnold Walton, George Novotny, Ed Rund, Karl Walz and Ray Dilley.
Committal rites will be at Maple Hill cemetery, east of Montour, with flag folding and presentation by Enright-Schrader Post No. 73 of the American Legion.
Fred Hurt was born Nov. 28, 1890, in Otter Creek township, son of Frank and Barbara Stepanek Hurt. He attended rural schools in the area of his birth, where he grew to manhood.
On Sept. 5, 1918, he enlisted in the U.S. Army, during World War I and was separated from service at Camp Dodge on Jan. 19, 1919.
He was married to Miss Elizabeth “Lizzie” Balichek on rural Tama on Aug. 22, 1922, in the Methodist parsonage in Nevada by Rev. Shipman. The couple farmed the first five years of their marriage, 5 1/2 miles east of Potter, west of Tama. In March 1927, they moved onto the farm belonging to Mrs. Hurt’s father, Joe Balichek, in Highland township, where they resided until retiring to Tama in January 1946, and lived at 1020 McClellan street.
Mr. Hurt was a 50-year member of the Enright-Schrader Post No. 73 of the American Legion, World War I Barracks and belonged to the C.S.A. lodge in Vining.
He is survived by his widow, two sisters, Mrs. Frank (Barbara) Walton and Miss Julia Hurt, both of Marshalltown and several nieces and nephews.
