One Time Famous Twirler Laid to Rest in Town Where He Started Career
TOLEDO, Ia., Jan 11, - Special: The funeral services for Leonard L. “King” Cole, baseball pitcher who died at Bay City, Mich., Jan 6, were held from the home of his grandmother, Mrs. S. Phillips, in this city this afternoon, Dr. W. L. Alexander, pastor of the Methodist church, officiated.
Cole was born in Toledo April 15, 1886, receiving his preliminary training in baseball while attending the Toledo public schools and Leander Clark College. He achieved greatest fame as a member of the Chicago Cubs. In 1910 he won twenty of the twenty-four games and was a great factor in winning the last pennant won by the Chicago National League aggregation. He played with the Cubs the following season. In 1912 he was traded to Pittsburgh and was later released to Columbus. “King” had a great season in 1913 and that fall was drafted by the Yankees, who were then managed by Frank Chance, under whom Cole had done his best work with the Cubs. He had remained a member of the New York Americans since that time, pitching effectively in 1914. On May 9, 1910, Cole was married to Miss Ada Seder of Bay City, Mich., who with his mother, Mrs. Charles Parkhouse, and his two sisters residing south of Tama, survive him.
