--John H. Smith was born June 24th, 1826, in Clearfield county, Pennsylvania, and died at his late home in Tama, Saturday evening, Jan. 8th 1901, being in his 74th year. Deceased had been in failing health for several years, the result of advancing age. About two weeks ago he was taken with a paralytic stroke from which time he gradually grew weaker until death supervened. Funeral services were held the Monday following his death, briefly at his late home, a more extended service being conducted at the M.E. church of Sheridan, Rev. J.R. Happes? of Tama, assisted by D. Phillips of Sonora, conducting the sacred writs. The body was laid to rest in the Sheridan cemetery. Deceased was a man of noble character and all who knew him claimed him as a friend. His life was marked by adherence to christian duty, uniting with the U.B. church in his young manhood. He later became a member of the M.E. church of Sheridan, afterwards transferring his membership by letter to the M.E. church of Tama. He was united in marriage to Margaret Dillon in Pennsylvania, three children being born to them, two of whom survive him. Being bereaved of his wife he later married Miss Phoebe Patterson. Soon after they moved to Scott county, Iowa, where they resided for a period of six years, afterwards moving to Tama county, making their home in Columbia township for twenty-eight years. Subsequently they moved from their farm to Tama where they were residing when the deceased was called to his reward. Ten children were born to them, nine of whom survive their father.
