Martha L. Stewart was born in Montgomery County, Indiana May 8, 1827, was united in marriage to Alexander Whitely August 29, 1847, who proceded her to the other shore about ten years ago. Six children were born to them, four girls and two boys, all living to mourn the loss of a mother except one boy who lost his life some twenty years ago while doing his duty as an officer of the law. They came to this county and to Howard township in 1862 where she has resided ever since until she went to visit her daughters, Mrs. Willis Amidon and Mrs. Arthur Newhall in Larchwood, Lyons county, Iowa, some seven months ago where she was taken sick with that painful disease, dropsy, suffering perhaps more than we know but with that christian patience that none but those who seek a city which had foundations whose builder and maker is God, can possess and on July 2nd at the home of her daughter, Mrs. Arthur Newhall, her soul took its everlasting flight to God who gave it. She was a faithful wife and devoted mother and a quiet good neighbor and her christian character was exemplified in her willingness to give aid to those who were needy. Her remains were brought back to her old home and interred in Pleasant Hill cemetery. The funeral services were held at Pleasant Hill Sunday, July 3rd conducted by Rev. Hammitt and the very large concourse of neighbors and friends that followed her remains to its last resting place showed the respect and esteem that all who knew her had for her. The pall bearers were: W.A. McAnulty, L. Emerson, I.J. Dunn, Wm. Winters, Jonn Winters, John Pearson.
