Horace Richard Amidon, 88, of Johnston. formerly of lowa City, died Tuesday, March 12. 1996, at the Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston. Services will begin at l0:30 a.m. Saturday at Our Lady of Peace Chapel at Bishop Drumm in Johnston. Burial of the cremains will be in the Rose Hill Cemetery in Toledo. There will be no visitation. Westover Funeral Home in Des Moines is in charge of arrangements. Mr. Amidon was born March 9, 1908, in Toledo to Henry S. and Hattie May Amidon. He graduated from the University of Iowa in 1932. After working for the Chicago Tribune and the Burlington Hawkeye Gazette, he became owner and publisher of the Solon Economist from 1953 - 1961. He was later employed by the University of Iowa until his retirement. He served in the U.S.Army during World War II.He was a 50 year member of International Typographical Union and was a board member of the University of Iowa Credit Union. Survivors include his wife, Mary; two sons, the Rev. Philip Amidon of Omaha, Neb., Michael Amidon of Falcon Heights, Minn.; four stepsons, Bob Kearney of Glendale, Ariz., Jim Kearney of Tombstone, Ariz., Tom Kearney of Naperville, Ill., Dick Kearney of Olkey, Calif.; two step-daughters, Mary Ann Kelly of Johnston and Susan Anderson of West Point; three grandchildren; 24 stepgrandchildren; and l4 great-stepgrandchildren. His first wife, Cilia, and one son, Hollis J. Amidon, died earlier.
