TRAER - Burdell Henry Staker, 89, of Traer, died Thursday, April 24, in Waterloo after an extended illness.

He was born Feb. 2, 1919, in Crystal Township, son of Henry and Amelia Margaret Claussen Staker.

On Jan. 31, 1942, he married Jean Charlotte Henry at Traer United Presbyterian Church. He attended country school in the Garwin, Lincoln and Traer areas, graduating from Traer High School in 1937, and then continued his education at AIB in Des Moines. For a time he worked as a clerk in the courthouse in Toledo and later farmed all his life west of Traer.

Mr. Staker was an elder, trustee and head usher at the United Presbyterian Church. He also belonged to the Traer Lions and the Masonic Lodge. Burdell was on the North Tama School Board for 12 years serving as president for several years and was instrumental in establishing the North Tama Sports Complex east of town.

Survived by: his wife; four sons, Steven (Linda) of Marion, Dr. Bryce (Cindy) of Elburn, IL, Robert (Dr. Kim) Houlding of Madrid and Gene of Traer; three daughters, Mariel (Randy) Brubaker of Traer, Gloria (Michael) Whisner of Adel and Joie (Joshua) Casto of Traer; a sister Phyllis Earley of Cedar Falls, 18 grandchildren; and 16 great-grandchildren.

Preceded in death by: a brother, LaVern; and a sister, Marlene.

Services: 10:30 a.m., Monday at United Presbyterian Church, with burial in Buckingham Cemetery, both in Traer. Public visitation from 3-7 p.m. today at Overton Funeral Home, Traer.
