TRAER - George Emil Richard Roepke, 87, died Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 at Sunnycrest Care Center in Dysart, IA following an extended illness. A visitation was held at Overton Funeral Home on Wednesday, Jan. 14 from 4-7 p.m. The memorial service was held Thursday, Jan. 15, 2009 at the United Methodist Church in Traer with Pastor Ken Kent officiating with internment following at Floral Hills Memorial Gardens in Oelwein. Military rites were performed by the Traer American Legion.

George Emil Richard Roepke was born Jan. 17, 1921 in Oelwein, the son of Wilhelm and Caroline Haak Roepke. George received his education in Oelwein where he graduated from high school in 1939. He then began working for Independent Food Stores before entering the US Army Air Force.

Following his discharge he returned to Oelwein and was united in marriage to Frances Jarchow on Sept. 8, 1946. George and Frances then moved to Traer where he was the manager for Independent Foods. He then took employment with Ray Holst in the implement business where he was parts manager for 13 years. In 1963 he took the civil service test and began working for the United States Postal Service as a letter carrier in Traer. After his retirement in January of 1984, they continued to make Traer their home.

In his free time George enjoyed golfing, playing cards and mowing his lawn. George's death came on Sunday, Jan. 11, 2009 at the Sunnycrest Care Center in Dysart at the age of 87 years.

He was a member of the Traer United Methodist Church, Traer Country Club, a 62-year member of the Traer American Legion and currently was serving on the Traer Library Board. He is survived by his wife Frances of Traer, one brother Rev. Arthur Roepke of Oelwein, and two sisters, Margaret Roepke of Oelwein and Ruth Roepke Sperry of Turlock, CA and several nieces and nephews.
