TRAER - Aksel Alfred Petersen, 96, died Friday, November 21, 2008 following an extended illness. A memorial service was held Monday, Nov. 24 at 10:30 a.m. with Pastor Bruce Zimmerman officiating. Internment followed at Lincoln Township Cemetery, Voohrhies. A visitation was held Sunday, Nov. 23, 2008 from 3-6 p.m. at Overton Funeral Home, Traer, IA.
Aksel Alfred Petersen was born June 8, 1912 in Buckingham, IA to Jens Alfred and Anna (Nielsen) Petersen. He received his education at Lincoln 38 country school and on September 12 1935 he was united in marriage to Bertha Gibson. Aksel and Bertha farmed for many years in northern Tama County and later moved to Hudson where he operated a mobile feed grinder.
In 1949 they moved to Traer and was a partner in the Firestone Store and AWE filling station. Aksel later purchased a L.P. gas business which he operated until he sold it to Wieck Bros. Oil Co. He continued to work for Wieck Bros. until his retirement in 1977.
Bertha passed away in July of 1990 and on October 26, 1991 he married Iola Richardson at St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Traer and they made their home in Traer. Aksel has been a resident of Sunrise Hill Care Center in Traer where his death came on Friday, November 21, 2008 at the age of 96 years.
He was an active member of St. Luke's Lutheran Church in Traer. He is preceded in death by his parents; first wife Bertha; one brother Paul; two sisters Elsie Albert and Margareta Vaubel. He is survived by his wife Iola of Traer and two stepsons; Mike Richardson of Garwin and Dale Richardson of Reinbeck. Memorials may be directed to the St. Luke Evangelical Lutheran Church, Traer, IA.
