Hazel Amelia Joens was born June 25, 1907 on the Draper family farm near Buckingham, Iowa: the daughter of Lewis E. & Sadie Mae Keller Draper. She received her education in a country school near Buckingham and later graduated from Traer High School in 1927. Hazel then taught country school for a year, and on November 3, 1938, she as united in marriage to Thedore E. Joens in Waterloo, IA. Hazel & Ted made Traer their home all their married lives. Hazel worked with her husband at Ted's Appliance Store until their retirement.

Following Ted's death on April 8, 1973, she continued to live in Traer. Hazel then traveled extensively in and out of the country. She joined Friendship Force, which enabled her to stay with foreign families. Eventually, she became a member of the Sunrise Hill Care Center family in May 2005. This past week Hazel was admitted to Covenant Medical Center in Waterloo after suffering a stroke and her death came on Monday, February 19, 2007 at the age of 99 years. Hazel was a long-time member of the Traer United Methodist Church. She was an active member of the Traer community and was a Charter member of the Iowana Club, Legion Auxiliary (Gold Star mother) and Friendship Club. Hazel also enjoyed playing bridge and being with family and friends.

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Ted E; 1 son, Norman "Skip" Joens; 2 brothers, Norman and Glenn Draper; and a sister, Fern DeMange. Hazel is survived by 3 sons: Robert (Mary) Joens of Houston, MO, Ted (Jo) Joens of Denver, CO and Gordon (Elaine) Joens of Tulsa, OK; 1 daughter, Beverly Claussen of Grimes, IA; 15 grandchildren and 26 great grandchildren.

Overton Family Funeral Homes, Traer, IA was in charge of the arrangements.
