Charles Kent Buried Monday
Was Former Haven Farmer and Railroad Man
Funeral services for Chnarles Edward Kent were held Monday afternoon, Nov 24, 1941, at 2:00 from Hrabak's Funeral Home in Chelsea and 2:45 from the Haven church with Rev Trev White in charge. A quartet composed of Mrs Albert Kosta, Mrs Emil Vavra, Mrs Leonard Novak and Mrs William Stanek sang "The Old Rugged Cross" and "Beautiful Isle" accompanied by Mrs Clifford Houston at the organ.
Casket bearers were Ed Johnston, LD Shugart, John N Benda, George Benda, Clifford Houston and Philip KaDell. Burial was in the Haven cemetery.
Mr Kent died Saturday evening, Nov 22 at 8:45 of a paralytic stroke suffered the Wed afternoon before. He was stricken while sitting on the couch in the kitchen of his home. He never regained consciousness. Although he had not been confined to his bed or home, Mr Kent had been in poor health for several years.
Charles Edward Kent, son of Edward F Kent and Polly Spaulding Kent, was born July 13, 1872 on a farm in Poweshiek County, Iowa and died Nov 22, 1941 while a resident of Chelsea, IA, having reached the age of 69 years, 4 months and 9 days.
He attended the rural schools in Poweshiek County and, when a young man, moved to a farm in Tama County near Haven with his parents.
In 1899 Mr Kent was united in marriage with Ellen Haley of Tama. During their married life they lived on farms near Haven. Ellen Kent died in Oct of 1906. They were the parents of four children, two of whom survive: Master Sargeant Fred C Kent of Fort Monmouth, New Jersey and Mrs Clarence (Frances) Casey of Chelsea.
Two sons died in infancy.
On Jan 26, 1910, Mr Kent was united in marriage with Elma McRobers of Toledo. They lived on a farm near Haven for three years then moved to Glenwood, MN where they resided until 1919. Then they moved to Belle Plaine, IA where Mr Kent worked as a boiler maker's helper at the C & NW roundhouse until 1931 when he retired because of ill health. In 1939 he & his family moved to Chelsea.
Mr Kent was a member of the Methodist church.
Besides the two children from his first marriage mentioned above he is survived by his wife and two daughters, Mrs Don (Martha) Huron of Oak Park IL and Mrs Emmett (Clementine) Daniels of Palos Park, IL and two sons, Elmer of Belle Plaine & Warren of Chelsea. Also surviving are four grandchildren: Brian & Donna Daniels and Marilyn & Donna Casey; a brother Thomas Kent of Belle Plaine and an adopted sister: Mrs George Kensinger of Leonard ND. He was preceded in death by a son, Donald, from his second marriage.
