TAMA-Floyd W. Hand, age 77, of Tucson, Arizona formerly of Tama died Monday, January 7, 2008 at Tucson Heart Hospital. A Funeral Liturgy will be held Monday, January 14, 2008 at 11:00 AM at St. Patrick Catholic Church in Tama with Father Michael Mescher officiating. Interment will follow at St. Patrick’s Cemetery in Tama with military honors. Visitation will be Sunday, January 13 from 4 to 7 PM at Kruse-Phillips Funeral Home in Tama with a vigil service at 7 PM.
Floyd was born on May 5, 1930 in Tama the son of Floyd Leonard and Elsie (Rohach) Hand.
He graduated from Tama High School in 1947 and served four years during the Korean War in the U.S. Army.
On January 9, 1954, he was united in marriage to Delores Jane Sawin in Marshalltown.
Floyd used his G.I. Bill to attend and graduate from Worsham College of Mortuary Science following his military service. He worked at Johnson Funeral Home in Newton as an apprentice for one year and Laufersweiler Funeral Home in Fort Dodge for the next year and a half. Floyd then worked for Estel-Perrin Funeral Home in Marshalltown until 1968 after which he bought Mason-Hand Funeral Home in Tama. In addition Floyd purchased a house in Clutier in 1974, and converted it into a funeral chapel. He also purchased French Funeral Home in Reinbeck in 1979. He was a member of several organizations in the community including St. Patrick’s Catholic Church, Tama-Toledo Area Chamber of Commerce, Elks Lodge, Tama-Toledo Country Club, Tama American Legion, Fraternal Order of Eagles Aerie No. 2828, Hiram of Tyre Masonic Lodge #118, La Societe Des 40 & 8 Chevaux, Tama-Toledo Lions Club, Knights of Columbus, and Veterans of Foreign Wars. Floyd was also involved with the Iowa Funeral Directors Association, National Funeral Directors Association, Order of the Golden Rule, El Kahir Shrine, Scottish Rite of Free Masonry, and Elks U.S.A. In his spare time he enjoyed golfing, fishing, and hunting.
He was preceded in death by his father, Floyd L. Hand; one brother, Franklin Hand; one brother-in-law, Edward Dolezal; one son-in-law, Daniel Arias; and one great-granddaughter, Chloe Massey.
Survivors include his wife Delores of Tucson, AZ; his four children, Cynthia Arias of Anaheim, CA, Larry Hand of Colton, CA, Jeffrey Hand of Keller, TX, and Sandra (Robert) Spencer of Cedar Falls; his mother, Elsie Hand of Tama; two brothers, John Hand of Malcom, and LaVerne (Helen) Hand of Tama; one sister, Mildred Dolezal of Tama; eight grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund has been established.
